Odd you should say that - as I understand it, the conventional view is that sans-serif fonts are easier to read. By and large they're
recommended for the web.
But I'm aware that there's a slight anomaly whereby my text can appear awkwardly small for some readers. My guess is that you're using Firefox at the default text size. Firefox seems to render the standard text sizes in Dreamweaver 4 drastically smaller than any other browser. This does make the text vanish into the background somewhat. Other browsers interpret the standard sizes differently, and give bigger, clearer text.
This odd glitch makes page design a pain in the arse. I have to ensure that the miniature Firefox text wraps around the photos in a fairly tidy manner, while at the same time trying to make the page layout work well with the larger, clearer, text thrown up by every other browser. I literally spend hours on this stuff - shifting photos up a bit, down a bit - and I'm never really happy with the results. I can't simply make the text bigger, because while that will make Firefox users happy, everyone else will wonder why I've switched to an absolutely ginormous text size.
I suspect the problem may be down to the fact that Dreamweaver 4 came out in 2001. Possibly later versions are able to fix uniform text sizes across all browsers. Alternatively, in CSS it's possible to fix text at a specified size in pixels, so it should appear uniformly large and clear in any browser. The bad news is that my site is built without CSS!
The quick and dirty solution is just to increase text size in your browser. But, of course, I can't expect the readers to make adjustments to accommodate my obsolete back-end technology. It's up to me to make the site work well for everyone. I am planning to upgrade all sorts of things before the next issue (up to buying a whole new computer), so with any luck the font-issue should get sorted.
