Nemesis To Go Issue Seven is up.... [May. 20th, 2009|04:51 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Well, as the bishop said to the actress (or was it the actress to the bishop? I can never remember) - it's up. Nemesis To Go Issue Seven has been hurled onto the interweb, and so far the interweb hasn't hurled back. This must be a good sign.

Here's the traditional Really Big Banner. Click it to go to the zine itself:

I think everything works, but after doing 7 of these things now I've learned that what I think isn't always a reliable guide to actual functionality. So, I'll be giving the entire thing a once-over in the coming days to see if any errors and glitches have slipped through my rigourous quality control net (which basically involves me staring blank-eyed at my monitor untill my brain turns to jelly). If you spot anything that's gone a bit wrong, let me know and I'll see about fixing it.

I'll also be doing some big pimpin' carefully targeted promotional activity around the web in the near future, just to let the world know that the new issue is up.

Right, then. It's up, it's all yours. By all means get stuck in...

I'm finding the small bright white, sans-serif text to be very hard to read. That sort of thing can put punters off quite quickly. A slightly more legible font would be appreciated.

Odd you should say that - as I understand it, the conventional view is that sans-serif fonts are easier to read. By and large they're recommended for the web.

But I'm aware that there's a slight anomaly whereby my text can appear awkwardly small for some readers. My guess is that you're using Firefox at the default text size. Firefox seems to render the standard text sizes in Dreamweaver 4 drastically smaller than any other browser. This does make the text vanish into the background somewhat. Other browsers interpret the standard sizes differently, and give bigger, clearer text.

This odd glitch makes page design a pain in the arse. I have to ensure that the miniature Firefox text wraps around the photos in a fairly tidy manner, while at the same time trying to make the page layout work well with the larger, clearer, text thrown up by every other browser. I literally spend hours on this stuff - shifting photos up a bit, down a bit - and I'm never really happy with the results. I can't simply make the text bigger, because while that will make Firefox users happy, everyone else will wonder why I've switched to an absolutely ginormous text size.

I suspect the problem may be down to the fact that Dreamweaver 4 came out in 2001. Possibly later versions are able to fix uniform text sizes across all browsers. Alternatively, in CSS it's possible to fix text at a specified size in pixels, so it should appear uniformly large and clear in any browser. The bad news is that my site is built without CSS!

The quick and dirty solution is just to increase text size in your browser. But, of course, I can't expect the readers to make adjustments to accommodate my obsolete back-end technology. It's up to me to make the site work well for everyone. I am planning to upgrade all sorts of things before the next issue (up to buying a whole new computer), so with any luck the font-issue should get sorted.

You're right that I'm using Firefox, though I've just had a look at the site in Safari and the text is rendered exactly the same.

I was always told that it's easier to read large blocks of seriffed text and I certainly find that to be the case. Though apparently studies have shown that there's no real difference between them for legibility.

The weird thing is, the site looks great (all text legible and at a decent size) in Firefox & Safari on Andi's Mac. In fact it looks good in Firefox on my Eee, as well. It's only on my PC that Firefox text defaults to teeny-weeny size. Maybe screen resolution has something to do with it.

Anyway. Futher investigations will continue on this. I suspect it'll fix itself when I revise the site in CSS, and select a specific text size in pixels, but that will happen after I get a new computer...

In the meantime, you could always uninstall all sans-serif fonts, thus forcing your computer to display its next in line default font. That will probably mean the entire web suddenly goes into Times Roman. Drastic but it could work!

I've now tried it on Firefox on my work PC and it's perfectly legible. It's only hard to read with Firefox and Safari on my Mac. It might be the Macs font rendering that's to blame, yet you say it's fine on Andi's Mac.

I think Andi's Mac uses Helvetica as its default sans-serif font, because it doesn't have the font I actually use, Arial, installed (apparently this is usual for older Macs).

Helvetica seems to be a slightly clearer font (it's a bit 'longer' than Arial, if that's the right term), so maybe that's a factor.

I think I'll take a trip to the Apple Store in Regent Street and do some beta-testing!
